How to Write Podcast Show Notes That Help (and Rank)
Show notes are a distribution channel, not paperwork.
Why show notes matter more than you think
Show notes do three jobs at once: they tell a reader whether to listen, they help listeners find the one part they care about, and they're your biggest on-page SEO asset. A transcript-adjacent notes page is how Google finds your episode — and how listeners share it.
The template that always works
- One-sentence hook — the episode's promise, in a line that makes someone click.
- Three takeaways — the three things a listener will get. Bullet points, not paragraphs.
- Timestamps — the key moments with time codes, so people can jump to what matters.
- Guest + links — who's in it and where to find them.
- Resources mentioned — every link referenced in the conversation.
- Call to action — subscribe, rate, or the product you're building.
The SEO layer
Title the notes with the question the episode answers, not a pun. Write a real 150–300 word summary (not a one-liner). Use the transcript to find the exact phrases listeners search for, and put those in your headings. One well-optimized notes page out-ranks a hundred generic ones.
Don't write them by hand
Show notes should be generated from the transcript, not typed from memory. The transcript already contains the takeaways, the timestamps, and the links — the notes are just a structured extraction. Automate the extraction and spend your time reviewing, not transcribing.
